In
September 2001, Prince Hamzah began his undergraduate studies in
the United States.
When
asked what concerns him most for Jordan, His Royal Highness says
it is impossible to isolate one single issue from the dynamics of
the country. Coming of age in the 21st century, however, Prince
Hamzah has personally experienced the rapid social change and globalization
affecting young Jordanians and youth around the world. Young people
under the age of 19 comprise more than half of the Kingdom's population.
With
the growing popularity of the internet and satellite television
broadcasts, Prince Hamzah is concerned about how Jordanians will
become an integral part of the global village. "While reaping
the benefits of these new technologies and relationships, we must
take care to preserve the fabric of our society. We have so many
strengths as a people, in our culture, history, and heritage. So
many noble traditions define us. Knowing 'who we are' is very important.
We are a family structured society providing a strong safety net.
I would hate to lose that," he says.
In a 17 August 2001 speech at the Al Hussein Third Arab Youth Forum
held in Amman, His Royal Highness also acknowledged the steadfastness
of Jordanians who "continue the process of acquiring knowledge
and science from around the globe, creating new cities, building
distinguished universities as well as advanced research institutions
and factories. They pursue their endeavor despite
many challenges and limited resources."
His
Royal Highness stressed, "youth have a vital and important
role to play. The future
depends on our ability
to analyze the circumstances and understand the
requirements and means to achieve our goals." When confronted
with resistance, "there is no way
except through dialogue
and to convince people of the need for change." Prince
Hamzah recognizes that younger generations bear a heavy burden.
He advised them not to give in to despair, and urged them to "accept
the challenge
conduct a rich and in-depth dialogue, which can
lead to initiatives at the scientific, cultural and social levels."
His
Royal Highness maintained that, "it is not impossible to
attain your aspiration provided it is based on a clear vision, sound
programs and realistic plans, on logic and knowledge, and by being
well-prepared and open to other cultures." The goal, as
stated by Prince Hamzah at the Arab Youth Forum is: "A society
enjoying prosperity and growth with everybody acquiring their right
to science and knowledge and to living a decent life."
Prince Hamzah also envisages a bright tomorrow for his nation. In
his own words:
"I hope that we can strengthen this country, working together
to build upon the accomplishments of our parents and grandparents
to realize the vision of Jordan as an oasis, a place where
everyone lives with pride, enjoys life, works hard, believes in
something, and feels comfortable raising their children in a safe,
free and healthy environment. The most important thing is that all
the people of Jordan believe that together we can build a future
that is worthy of our country, our people and our heritage. Insha'
Allah (God willing) it will be a great future under the sun!"
